Management
The board director responsible for social and environmental issues is Paul Murray, Finance Director.
Carlton’s most significant issues are associated with viewers, local communities and employees. We have a duty to viewers to uphold high standards and comply with codes of conduct. We believe that we should be active members of the communities we serve, supporting local causes and championing local issues. Television is a people business, and our ability to attract top talent is enhanced by being recognised as a responsible company.
Our environmental impact is small and the main implication for the business is the cost of purchasing resources such as energy and materials. Our ongoing focus on these issues will improve efficiency and produce cost savings.
Carlton has formal policies covering the environment, human resources and business conduct and is governed by the industry codes applying to programme and advertising content.
Programming
Carlton’s programming plays an important role in raising public awareness and stimulating debate by regularly covering social and environmental issues.
During 2003, the European Year of Disabled People, Carlton had a pan-regional campaign to help raise the awareness and understanding of disability issues. CHANGING ATTITUDES – CARLTON’S DISABILITY CAMPAIGN 2003 featured over five-and-a-half hours of original programming across our regions, ITV1 London, ITV1 Central England, ITV1 West Country, ITV1 West of England, and ITV1 Wales. The programmes, several of which received industry awards, aimed to help combat discrimination and develop viewers’ awareness of many of the major issues surrounding disability.
This social action programming was supported by a dedicated website, which received over 7,000 hits, a text page and a comprehensive 40-page booklet, available in Braille, audio and large print. Over 15,000 copies of the booklet, which also gave details of support groups, were actively distributed throughout the community, key organisations and to callers to the Disability Rights Commission Helpline, who supported the campaign.
ITV and its licence holders are committed to regional programming that attracts viewers by reflecting issues relevant to the communities. Carlton’s regional programmes have included award-winning documentaries such as THE TUBE for ITV1 London, WEST EYE VIEW for ITV1 West Country, WATERWORLD for ITV1 Central England, DESPERATELY SEEKING for ITV1 West of England and ITV1 Wales’ MELTING POT.
